How do you kickstart engagement in a brand-new forum?

How do you get people talking in a forum that’s completely dead? Nobody wants to post in an empty room, but if nobody posts, the room stays empty. It's the ultimate chicken-and-egg situation.

I know webmasters use totally different strategies to get past this - from setting up staff seed accounts to fake early activity, to reaching out directly to paid posters, running giveaways, or building up a blog first to drive traffic before ever opening the board.

I'm curious how you all handle this stage.

Having colleagues from another forum could really help you; you can introduce yourself there or arrange a cross-promotion where you post on each other's forums. That way, you can boost participation as soon as possible and prevent your forum from sitting empty and inactive for too long.

Gaining more and more members is the key to starting a forum and making it active. Promote your forum on social media. Making sure that you yourself out a lot of effort when it comes to posting content in a regular manner. This shall also encourage other members to publish as well. Make sure that you market your forum in the relevant niche groups. This is one if the most important things you could do.

What if all that has already been done? What else can be done? Because what you're saying sounds just like the generic advice people always give.

Typically, you want to create the first bit of content yourself. You should create new topics that resonate with your target audience.

Create topics that engage people and make them want to reply to them. Leave them open-ended and get controversial if you want to.

After that, while waiting for organic members (those who join on their own), do some post exchanges or get some paid posting services to help grow the forum.
