This question often comes up; it depends on the size of the forum and its user base. If it is extremely large, it will clearly need more than one, but if the forum has a manageable number of people for a single person, then one moderator suffices.

It depends on how big the forum. I mean, honestly, my forums don’t need admins and moderators - so if you see them, they’re just me being friendly to people.

It depends on the niche of the forum. If you’ve got a promotional forum that offers services, you’ll need some extra help when you open your forum up. If it’s a gaming forum or a general discussion forum, you should wait to get staff once the forum becomes active and you feel the need to hire staff. Also if you’re not familiar with the software you’re using, it’s fine to hire a co admin to help with the technical things. I currently have a co admin on Gex Forums and he handles the tech side of things with the forum, where I pay for the hosting and domain name.

This is a question I see asked often, and depending on how you run things and how much work there is for your forum, I find it is a different answer for each person individually.

For myself, I find that having just myself and one other admin, usually my other half, is more than enough from the beginning. As long as I can keep up with the workload, I don’t see a reason to have any mods until things start getting super busy and the workload gets too much for me.

My Facebook drumming group needs moderators - because it gets consistent real posts from other people.

I have a Facebook group with 60,000+ members, and it gets a lot of daily activity. We have 6 staff members, including my wife and me. Most of the time, 6 staff members are too many.

The same goes for a forum.

If you can’t do everything without becoming overwhelmed, then add 1 moderator. If both of you become overwhelmed, add a second moderator.

Repeat until staff members are not overwhelmed.

Quit adding staff just because you don’t want to say no to their plead to be staff.

Trail Running Forum - A forum dedicated to trail running, gear, training, and more.

I think that this entirely depends on the size of your forum. If your forum is incredibly huge, then you may need a lot of moderators for your forum. However, if your forum is small, you may need a couple of moderators. You could hire more moderators as time goes by. This also depends on the growth of your forum as well. Many people usually see a rapid growth and they then think about hiring more moderators.

I agree with what you said; it depends on the number of users. Six employees might seem like a lot, but in your case, it’s not entirely excessive given the high volume of daily posts—a single moderator couldn't handle it all. Have you considered implementing some form of AI? Even if just to make the job easier—you’d still use moderators, but the workload would be lighter; in fact, four might be enough instead of six.

My forum has nearly 3000 members, and I’ve been running it solo for years. If it were more active, I think I’d need a moderator or two to help keep members in line and spam off the forum. There are too many factors to account for to dictate how many moderators you need.

I highly believe that this also depends a lot on how many subsections you have in your forum. It is incredibly hard to manage subsections in different forums and this is one of the main reasons why it is always a good idea to have moderators accordingly. As an administrator, it might be hard to go through each and every section. So, moderators could help with that.
