What's the best way to organise forum categories?

PopFuse – Your hub for movies, TV shows, music, gaming, celebrities, and pop culture.

Community Interviews – Get to know the people behind online communities through interviews.

Bingely – Your blog for movies, TV shows, reviews, and entertainment news.

Gizmo Network – Where chaos meets creativity! Explore forums, websites, and creative projects.

I break forum categories down into the following:

  • Main Niche Boards

  • Member Community

  • Official Boards

  • Staff Boards

The main niche boards are the most important. They should be the meat of your forum, the topics that it’s about. Put those boards at the very top because those are the topics people are joining for. Don’t make them hunt those down. I suggest 3 to 5 boards in this category.

The member community boards are stuff like introductions, off-topic, posting games, etc. There should be very few of these.

Official boards are the forum news section and the forum helpdesk.

Staff boards usually include a staff area, a storage for “evidence”, and I usually add a board that only I can access as my “virtual office”

Altogether, I wouldn’t have more than 10 to 12 boards, including staff boards.
