How to protect your privacy on the internet?

Identity theft is a major problem nowadays. Many people usually make the mistake of sharing their identity on websites where the information may get into the wrong hands. Under such kind of circumstances, online privacy is a major concern. Many organisations are working to make a better system related to this. However, as an individual, we should be responsible for the information we share online. So, how do we protect our privacy online?

There isn’t a 100% way to protect yourself, but there are a few things you can do to enhance your privacy on the Internet. First, think twice before opening suspicious links and sharing your personal data. Second, get a secure VPN - it will help you a lot. Unfortunately, if you use social media, they already know everything about you.

Protection of privacy is becoming harder and harder in the current age of AI and technology. Social media websites already know a lot of things about you. Many people are concerned about privacy and this is why they may choose not to share personal information. Regardless if that, Facebook already gains access to your information when you upload photos and other stuff. The same goes true for other social media platforms as well. Social media platforms are regulated by the government, so you could say that the government has access to your data, in other words.

I think one of the biggest things is just being careful how much personal information you put out there. It’s scary how much someone can piece together from a few innocent posts 😬 I use different passwords, 2FA wherever I can and I’m always suspicious of random links/messages. If something looks even slightly dodgy, I’m not touching it with a barge pole! I think we’ve all become so used to sharing our lives online that sometimes we forget just how public the internet actually is πŸ‘€

It might help to use strong, unique passwords, enable two-factor authentication if available, and avoid suspicious links. It is also important to limit what you share online.

Make sure you do not put any sensitive and personal information there for everyone to see. Also make sure that you don’t use passwords that are easy to guess or bypass.

For me, i always ensure that I don't share details that are very private to me on social media and online forums. Those kinds of private information shared on social media can be used to target people for scams and online blackmails.

I think the first thing is to actually stop sharing everything. People are posting their location, their new phone, the food they eat. Then, they will be wondering why they are getting strange calls. I shield my real name on social platforms. It's for privacy reasons.

Use an ad blocker, and when registering on suspicious or unfamiliar sites, use an email address separate from your primary ones. Avoid accepting cookies from almost any siteβ€”except for those that force you toβ€”and clear your cookies every time you log out of a site. Also, if possible, use a security key (I’m not sure of the exact term, but it’s a USB device that generates a code); this makes it nearly impossible for any of your accounts to be hacked.

Knowing what we share online about ourselves is the first step to take. It is not everything that you talk about in the discussion that you are having with people online because they can end up using it against you.
